Ernest was born in 1887 and was the son of William an iron worker and Sarah Ann Barson née Swift, they lived at 14 Horace Ave, Stapleford. William was born in 1852 in Beeston Mary Ann Swift was born in 1854 in Syston, Leicestershire, they were married in 1873, which was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 13 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were : - William b1875 Nottm, Arthur b1877 Nottm, Florence Louisa b1879 Nottm, their remaining children were all born in Stapleford ,Gertrude b1880, Minnie b1881 Lily b1884, Alfred b1885, Ernest b1887, Albert b1889, Neville b1893, and Louise b1895 In 1911 the family are living at 14 Horace Ave, Stapleford, William 59 yrs unemployed, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 57 yrs and children, Albert 22 yrs a lace draughtsman, Neville 18 yrs a lace hand shreader, and Louise 16 yrs a lace drawer. Ernest married Mary Murden (born 1886 in Eastwood) in 1910 which was recorded in the Basford Registration district they went on to have a daughter Ivy born in 1910, In 1911 the family are living at 63 Nottingham Road, Stapleford Nottingham and are shown as Ernest 24 yrs a lace twisthand he is living with his wife Mary 25 yrs and their daughter Ivy 3 months old.
Private Ernest Barson had originally joined the Royal Navy on a short service engagement (5+7 years – 5 years service in the RN and 7 years in Royal Fleet Reserve.) on 15 January 1906 when he was 18 years old. He served in the following ships or shore establishments: HMS Victory, 15 January 1906-31 March 1906 (Ordinary Seaman); HMS Barfleur, 1 April 1906-24 May 1906. Ernest was discharged on 24 May 1906 ‘by purchase’ (£10) and his engagement cancelled. (bought himself out ) At the outbreak of the war he enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters, , he died at 2nd Durham Voluntary Aid Hospital South Shields on 7th August 1915 of heart failure. His body was returned to his family in Nottingham and he is buried in Stapleford Cemetery.
Two of his brothers also died during the Great War . Private Neville Barson, died of wounds on 23rd March 1918, while serving with 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, he was the 26 year-old husband of Maggie Stapleton Barson, of Shaftesbury Avenue, Sandiacre. Private Alfred Barson enlisted in Long Eaton and served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 19th September 1918 and is buried in Chappelle British Cemetery, Honlon In memoriam published 7th August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BARSON. – In loving memory of Drummer Ernest Barson, who died at South Shields, August 7th, 1915.
