Family History

Alfred Sampson Mugglestone was born in 1896 he was the son of William Henry a colliery pick sharpener and Ellen Mugglestone née Sutton of 17 Portland Street, Pleasley Hill. William Henry was born in 1858 at Southwell, Ellen Sutton was born in 1856 at Waslow, Staffordshire, they were married in 1881 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Pleasley Hill, Mansfield William Henry 53 yrs a colliery pick sharpener he is living with his wife Ellen 55 yrs and 5 of their children including Alfred Sampson 15 yrs an apprentice joiner.

Military History

Sapper Alfred Sampson Mugglestone enlisted at Mansfield he served with the 457th Field Company Royal Engineers. He died of wounds on 8th July 1917 at the 45th Casualty clearing station, France and is buried at Achiet-Le- Grand Communal Cemetery Extention, France.
