Family History

He was born about 1894, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Clark who had seven children of whom six were alive at the time of the 1911 census. In 1901 Henry (44, b. Derbyshire) and Elizabeth (44, b. Clay Cross, Derbys) were living on Midland Road, Royston, with their five children John (16, b. Meaden Bank, Notts), William Harry (11), Stanley (6), May (4) and Grace (1). All their younger children had been born in Royston. In 1911 they lived on North Street, Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Five children were still at home; William, Stanley, May, Grace and Casto, their youngest child, who was 9 years old. Their eldest son, John, was not in the household. Stanley's sister, May, died on 17 July 1917 age 21.

Military History

He served in France from 17 February 1915 and was killed five months later. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (panel 21). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Extra Information

Inscription on kerbstone of grave in Sutton in Ashfield cemetery: ‘In loving memory of May, the beloved daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Clark, who died July 17th 1917 aged 21 years. Thy will be done. Also of their beloved son, Pte Stanley Clark, killed in action in France June 16th 1915 age 21 years. Duty bravely done.' Soldiers' Effects: His father, Henry, was his legatee.
