John Henry Turton was born in 1881 at Hucknall and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Hannah Turton née Collinson of 24 Co Operative Ave, Hucknall. His father was born in 1856 in Hucknall and his mother Hannah Collinson was born in 1857 in Hucknall they were married in 1879 in Nottingham and went on to have 5 children all of whom were born in Hucknall John b1881, Bertha b1884, Luther b1886, Beatrice b1891 and Gladys b1899. John Henry married his wife Ada Allsopp at St Marys Church, Hucknall on 14th February 1903, they went on to have the following children born at Hucknall John Thomas born 2nd October 1904, Wilfred Laurie born 26th October 1906, Sidney born 29th October 1908 and Gladys Evelyn born 18th July 1910 , their final child Josiah was born 31st August 1912 at Bulwell. The family lived at 37 Thames Street, Bulwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at 16 Whyburn Street, Hucknall and are shown as John Henry Turton 30 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Ada 29 yrs and their children, John Thomas 6 yrs, Wilfred Laurie 4 yrs, Sidney 2 yrs and Gladys Evelyn 8 months.
Private John Henry Turton, enlisted on 14th June 1915 in Nottingham, he gave his age as 34 yrs and 4 months his address as 37 Thames Street, Bulwell and his occupation as a coal miner,his next of kin was his wife Ada of the same address. He served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, and landed in France on 6th March 1916, he was appointed unpaid lance corporal on 22nd September 1916. He was killed in action on 13th August 1918 and is buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery.
His brother, Luther Turton was injured in an accident underground in 1916 following article was published in the Nottingham Daily Express on 26th January 1916 :- “Luther Turton, a Hucknall miner, aged 29, of 29 Co-operative-avenue, met with a nasty accident at Hucknall Colliery, last evening. [25th January 1916] It is stated that a number of wagons broke loose and Turton was knocked down, sustaining a broken ankle.
