Family History

Albert Ernest Oakley was born on 18th December 1879 at Matlock, Derbyshire, he was baptised on the 11th June 1882 at Matlock, he was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Elizabeth Ann Oakley née Evans of Stoneyford Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Nottinghamshire. His father John was born in 1862 and his mother Elizabeth Ann Evans was born in 1860 both were born in Horsehay, Shropshire, they were married on 17th May 1880 in Shropshire, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Stoneyford Road, Sutton in Ashfield, John 49 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 51 yrs and their children, Albert Edward 17 yrs a butcher, Beatrice 15 yrs a domestic assistant and Leonard William 16 yrs a rivet heater. In the same 1911 census we find that Albert Ernest had joined the Army, he is in barracks in India with the 2nd battalion East Lancashire Regiment he is 32 yrs of age and a Private. Albert Ernest married Florence Maud Slaney (born 12th October 1875) in 1912 at Mansfield, they lived at 250 Mansfield Road Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. Florence brought a daughter to the marriage Lucy Oakley Slaney born 7th May 1902. Commencing 7th June 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week.

Military History

Private Albert Ernest Oakley enlisted at Alfreton whilst residing at Preston, he was in the army by 1911 when he was in India with his regiment the 2nd battalion East Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd November 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
