Family History

Arthur Gittins was baptised at Skegby on 15th October 1897 and was the son of of William a coal miner hewer and Mary Jane Gittins née Turner of 18 Longdon Terrace, Stanton Hill. William was born in 1867 at Madeley, Shropshire, Mary Jane Turner was born in 1867 at Sutton in Ashfield, married on 11th April 1887 at the Parish Church, Mansfield they went on to have 18 children, 11 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, his siblings were Edith b1888, John b1891, Elizabeth 1893, Edward 1902 and Kate 1905. In the 1911 the family are living at 2 Wood Street, Sutton in Ashfield

Military History

Private Arthur Gittens enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire and died 24th October 1918 of pneumonia, he is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Plot S. II. Row AA. Grave 24.
