Edward was born in 1888 in Arnold and was the son of William a frame work knitter and Hannah Hartshorn née Turner who lived at Queen Street, Arnold. William was born in 1858 in Arnold and Hannah Turner had also been born in 1858 also in Arnold, they 9 children all of whom were born in Arnold, who were : - Henry b1877, Emma 1879, William b1881, Percy b1886, Edward b1888, Lawrence 1891, Bernard b1892, Ada b1896 and Florence b1898. He married Lily Carr (born 11th March 1893) on 10th January 1913 in the East Kirkby Parish Church and the father of Lily born 1914 and Emily born 1917 Hartshorn they lived at 5 Sherwood Street, East Kirkby
He enlisted at Mansfield on 26th August 1915 in the first instance into the Sherwood Foresters with regimental number 30482. He gave his age as 24 years and 241 days and stated he was an underground stableman. His next of kin was given as his wife Lily. He served in “H” Company of the 3rd Battalion, joining them on the 18th March 1916. This was a Reserve training and Holding battalion stationed near Sunderland, and had hundreds of men in it who had previously been wounded and were awaiting posting back to their units in France and Flanders. He was however posted to the 2/8th Battalion Royal Scots on the 14th April 1916, because he had been medically down graded to CI, but was later transferred by them to their 13th Battalion. It was during the Amiens Offensive that Edward was killed in action on 27th August 1918, he is buried in Hersin Communal Cemetery extension, France
His brother Lawrence Hartshorn also served in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment during the Great War and died on 23rd March 1916. The only Edward Hartshorn born in Arnold (UKSWD) was 13 in 1901 (born J/F/M 1888) so it must be presumed Hartshorn gave an incorrect date of birth on enlisting.
