Family History

John was born in 1887 in Newark and was the son of Joseph an army pensioner and gardener and Mary Ann Catherine Wilson née Orlopp of 3 Boundary Road Newark. His father Joseph Atherton Wilson was born in 1838 in Balderton , his mother Mary Ann Orlopp was born in 1856 in Malta, they were married on 23rd July 1877 in Brecknock, Breconshire and went on to have the following children : Charles William b1878, Mary Ann Catherine b1880, Florence b181, William b1885, John b1887, Edith b1889, Joseph b1895 all the children were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 3 Boundary Road, Newark and are shown as Joseph 72 yrs a retired army pensioner and gardener, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 53 yrs and their children , Charles no age given, Catherine no age given and Joseph A 18 yrs a house painter

Military History

Sergeant John Wilson enlisted in Newark, he served with 'A' battery Royal Horse Artillery and landed in France on 11th November 1914. He was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 and is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.

Extra Information

His brother Joseph also served during the 'Great War' he served with 2/7th Sherwood Foresters and and was killed in action on 6th December 1917. He has no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
