Charles Edward Townsend was born in 1892 he was the son of Edward a hosiery silk threader and Elizabeth Townsend née Beastall and the brother of John William, Hannah and Elizabeth Townsend of Skegby Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Edward was born in 1859 and Elizabeth Beastall was born in 1861 both were born in Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at Skegby Road, Sutton in Ashfield, Edward is 52 yrs and a silk threader, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and 4 of their children, Charles Edward is 19 yrs of age and is a wool and cotton worker. Charles Edward married Edith Fisher (born 18th May 1893) in 1918 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district they lived at Sutton Road, Huthwaite. Commencing 20th April 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.
Corporal Charles Edward Townsend enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield he initially served with the service number 32311 in the Machine Guns Corps. He was killed in action on 29th September 1918 and is buried at Bellicourt British Cemetery.
