Family History

Bertie Singleton was born in 1892 at Newark and was the son of Harry Singleton a basket maker and the late Ellen Singleton née Braithwaite of 21, Duke Street, Doncaster. His father Harry was born in 1863 in Bingham and his mother Ellen Braithwaite was born in 1870 at Barkston, Leicestershire, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration District. They went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were: Harry b1889 Bingham, George William b1890 Newark, Bertie b1892 Newark, Elsie b1896 Newark, Mary b1900 Newark, Edna b1906 Newark and Ada b1906 Doncaster. In the 1901 census the family were living at 23 King Street, Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Duke Street, Doncaster and are shown as Harry 48 yrs a widow and basket maker, he is living with his brother William 50 yrs a farm labourer and his children Harry 22 yrs a soldier, Bertie 18 yrs a soldier, Elsie 15 yrs at home, Mary 11 yrs a scholar, Edna 5 yrs a scholar and Ada 3 yrs also at the address is his married sister Mary Hargreaves 35 yrs a visitor.

Military History

Private Bertie Singleton enlisted at Pontefract on 20th May 1911 , he was residing at Doncaster , he gave his age as 18 yrs 8 months and his occupation as that of a basket maker and his next of kin as his father Harry of 21 Duke Street, Doncaster. He was posted to the 2nd battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 30th September 1912 and to Corporal on 18th April 1914. He landed in France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 23rd October 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
