Robert was born in 1887 in Newark, and was the son of Harry a boot repairer and Matilda Revill née Lynn of 4 Priests Yard, Chatham Street, Newark. His father Harry was born in 1864 in Newark and his mother Matilda Lynn was born in 1865 also in Newark. They were married in Newark in 1884 and went on to have 7 children , sadly two were to died in infancy or childhood. Their surviving children were all born in Newark and were :- Bertha b1885, Robert b1887, Harold b1889, Edgar b1898 and Phyliss b 1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at Priests Yard, Chatham Street, Newark and are shown as Harry 46 yrs head of the family a boot repairer, he is living with his wife Matilda 46 yrs and 3 of their children , Harold 22 yrs , single and a maltster, Edgar 13 yrs a scholar and Phyliss 9 yrs a scholar.
Private Robert Revill was a career soldier , he enlisted at Newark, on 13th June 1906 , he was 19 years and three months of age , he was a general labourer and was living at 4 Priests Yard, Chatham Street, Newark, his next of kin was his father Harold, He stated his religion was that of Church of England. He attested to serve for 9 years with the colours and a further 3 years in the reserves. At first he served with he Northumberland Fusiliers being posted to their depot at Newcastle on Tyne on 16th June 1906. Later that year on 15th November 1906 he transferred to the Border Regiment. His army service record shows that he served as follows , he was in England up to 7th January 1907, then from 8th January 1907 to 30th December 1907 he served in South Africa. He returned home from 31st December 1907 where he served until 29th September 1908 when he once again went overseas and served in the East Indies . It was while he was in India that he extended his service on 6th August 1914 for a further two years. He returned home on 8th August 1914. On 17th March 1915 he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and went to Gallipoli where he was serving when he was killed in action. He has no known grave , his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey.
His brother Harold Revill also served during the Great War , he served in the Tyneside Irish battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 9th April 1917 and is buried in Roclincourt Valley Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Article published 26th June 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Eldest son of Mr & Mrs Harry Revill, 4 Priests Yard, Chatham Street, Newark. Was a maltster employed at Messrs. Gilstraps before he enlisted in the Borderers nine years ago. His time with the colours in the ordinary course of events would have expired on the 18th inst. When he joined the army he went out with his regiment to South Africa and seven years ago this regiment was drafted to India. They returned to England in February en route for the front when he had the opportunity of spending a brief furlough, only four days, with his parents after an absence of seven years. Brother of Pte.
