Colin was born in 1897 at West Bridgford, and was the only son of James a merchant tailor and Florence Bell née Holehouse, of “Mount Annan” Ablemarle Road, Woodthorpe, Nottingham.His father James was born in Dornock, Scotland and his mother Florence was born in 1870 in Nottingham , they married in 1896 in Nottingham. In the 1901 census the family are living at 1 Patrick Road, West Bridgford, James is a merchant tailor by the following census the family have moved to Woodthorpe, Nottingham. In the 1911 Cencus he and his parents are living at “Mount Annan” Ablemarle Road, Woodthorpe ,together with 2 servants, his father is a tailor
Second Lieutenant Colin Bell originally enlisted and served with service number 67176 as a private in the Sherwood Foresters regiment, he was commission as 2nd Lieutenant and is shown as being attached to the 15th (Bantam) Battalion of The Sherwood Foresters at the time of his death. While with his battalion in the trenches near Elverdinghe, on the night of 29th through to morning of 30th October 1917 the enemy shelled their trenches. This caused a number of casualties to the battalion in that 1 officer (2nd Lieut Bell) was killed along with 4 Other Ranks and 1 officer and 14 Other Ranks were wounded.His body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated at the Tyne Cot memorial , Belgium
