Family History

Arthur Tonn was born on 16th September 1884 at North Hykeham and was baptised on 19th October 1884 at North Hykeham and he was the son of George Phillip Tonn a quarryman and Mary Tonn née Taylor of Reepham Lincoln. His father was born in 1853 in Germany, he married his wife Mary Taylor in 1883 at Lincoln and they had the following children Arthur b1884, Matthew Henry b1888, Lillian b1890 and William b1894 all were born in North Hykeham. Arthur Tonn married his wife Harriett Peet on 18th October 1905 at South Collingham, they went on to have three children, Eva born 29th July 1907 at Collingham, George born 15th June 1909 at Collingham and Lilian born 2nd May 1912 at Thorpe on the Hill. The family lived at Besthorpe Road, Collingham. Following his death his widow Harriett was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence for herself and her 3 children to commence on 11th June 1917.

Military History

Private Arthur Tonn enlisted on 31st March 1915 at Lincoln, he gave his address as Ludford, Lincolnshire and his age as 31 yrs and 196 days, he stated he was a farm labourer and his next of kin was his wife Harriett Tonn of the same address. He was given the service number 16133 and posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment. His first saw a theatre of war at Gallipoli and was admitted to the 5th Casualty Clearing station at Sulva Bay on 14th November 1915 with severe dysentery. He was returned to England where he was treated at Woldingham Enteric Depot admitted there on 13th April 1916 and released on 12th May 1916. He was transferred to the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and went to France, he was killed in action near Bethune France on 23rd October 1916 and is buried at Guards' Cemetery Lesboeufs Somme France
