South Collingham - St John the Baptist Church - Parishioners

St John the Baptist, Church Street, Collingham, Nottinghamshire, NG23 7LN. The memorial comprises a stained glass window and commemorative plaque with the names of those who died and includes rank, unit and date of death. Dedication: 'To the Glory of God the south east window in the chancel commemorates the men of this parish who sacrificed their lives in the Great War August 4th 1914 to 28th June 1919. RIP (names) Their name liveth for evermore.' The stained glass window cost £210 (invoice dated 26 June 1920) and the plaque £108 (invoice dated 1920). The window was made and installed by Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster and London and the plaque by Gawthorp and Sons, London. There was a charge of 7s 6d for fixing the memorial tablet which was paid to CV Russell, joiner and builder, South Collingham. A sum of 9s 4d remaining in the war memorial fund after meeting the costs of the window and plaque and a small amount for stationery relating to the service of dedication, was donated to the National Institute for the Blind. The window and plaque were installed in 1920. (Nottinghamshire Archives, ref PR16,440/1-4) A Second World War memorial in a similar style to the First World War plaque, has been fixed below the First World War plaque in such a way as to leave no gap between the two. There is also a handwritten Roll of Honour in the church.
