Family History

Ernest Arthur was born in 1898 in Basford and was the son of Walter Edward a builders carter and Annie Knight née Smith , of 141, Bulwell Lane, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Walter Edward was born in 1859 in Dronfield Woodhouse and his mother Annie Smith was born in 1867 in Whatton. They were married on 10th October 1887 in Ilkeston and had 11 children , Frederick Page b1890 Ilkeston, Minnie b1892 Ilkeston, Lizzie 1894 Ilkeston, Edward Claude 1896 Ilkeston, Ernest b1898 Basford, Benjamin b1900 Basford, John b1902 Basford, Horace b1904 Wordsley, Staffordshire, George b1907 Basford, Dorothy b1907 Basford and Edith b1910 Basford. In the 1911 census the family are living at 576 Vernon Road, Basford and are shown as Walter 52 yrs a builders carter, he is living with his wife Annie 44 yrs and their 11 children Ernest is 13 yrs and a dyers assistant.

Military History

Private Ernest Arthur Knight, enlisted in Acton Middlesex and served with the 12th (Pioneer) Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, he died of wounds on 12th August 1917 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.

In memoriam published 12th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KNIGHT. – In affectionate remembrance of our dear son and brother, Lance-Cpl. E. A. Knight, of 141, Bulwell-lane, Old Basford, died of wounds August 12th, 1917. Safe in the arms of Jesus.
