George Nicholas Harvey was born in 1897 at Newark and was the son of the late Henry Nicholas Harvey a sewing machine agent and Charlotte Harvey née Henson of 2 King Street, Newark. His father Henry Nicholas Harvey was born in 1867 at South Willingham Lincolnshire, he died in 1906 at Newark aged 39 yrs, his mother Charlotte Henson was born in 1874 at Newark, they were married in 1896 at Newark, and had 3 children, one died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Jessie Stephen b1906 at Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 King Street, Newark and are shown as Charlotte 37 yrs head of the family a widow and charwoman, she is living with her children George Nicholas 14 yrs a scholar and Jessie Stephen 5 yrs a scholar.
Private George Nicholas Harvey enlisted on 20thSeptember 1915 at Bootle, he gave his age as 19 yrs and his address as 2 King Street, Newark, his next of kin was his mother Charlotte of the same address. He was posted to the King's Liverpool Regiment and embarked from Southampton on 4th April 1916 and disembarked at Rouen, France on 6th April 1916, he joined his battalion in the field on 18th April 1916. He was killed in action on 10th August 1916 whilst serving with B company 3/7th King's Liverpool Regiment. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 30th August 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of Mrs Charlotte Birch (formerly Harvey), 2 King Street, Newark. Attended Christ Church School and was afterwards in the service of Major MacRae Gilstrap. Subsequently valet to the late Mr Eustace Barlow, on whose death he was footman to Mr Vernon, of Eastham, Cheshire. Enlisted on Oct. 4th 1915 and went out to France in April 1916. He was wounded in the head and received a fatal wound while being carried to the dressing station.
