John William Cavey was born in 1891 the son of William a farm labourer and Hannah Cavey, née Buxton of 1 Bullen Buildings, Boundary Road, Newark. William Cavey was born in 1873 at Hawton Hannah Buxton was born in 1863 at Marnham, married in 1888 at Newark and went on to have the following children, John William b1891, Alfred Ernest b1894, Alice Mary b1900, Edith Emily b1904 and George Arthur b1907, all were born in Newark. In 1911 the family are living at 1 Bullen Buildings, Boundary Road, Newark, William s a farm labourer, Hannah and their children John William out of work labourer, Alfred Ernest a packer, Alice Mary a scholar, Edith Mary a scholar and George Arthur,
Private John William Cavey enlisted on 29th August 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 23 yrs and 173 days, he was a labourer, posted to the Leicestershire Regiment on 5th September 1914 and later to the 7th battalion. He embarked on 29th July 1915 for France and on 9th April 1916 was admitted to hospital with influenza, he rejoined his unit on 19th April 1916. He was killed in action on 14th July 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 16th August 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of Mr & Mrs Cavey, 1, Bullen’s Buildings, Boundary Road, Newark. Worked for Messrs. Cafferata & Co., and at the commencement of the war enlisted in the 7th Leicesters. First at Wigston Camp, afterwards at Aldershot and Salisbury Plain. He had been in France about a year prior to his death.
