William Catley was born in 1896 at Newark and was the son of the late George Catley a corn porter and Fanny Catley, née Palethorpe 4 Mount Pleasant, Millgate, Newark. His father was born in 1858 at Newark and died in 1905 aged 44 yrs, his mother Fanny Palethorpe was born in 1867 at Newark, they were married in 1890 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Kate b1890, Edward b1893, William b1896, Phyllis b1898, Lottie b1901 and Frank b1903, all were born in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Mount Pleasant, Mill Gate Newark and are shown as Fanny 44 yrs a widow and laundress, she is living with her children, Edward 17 yrs a labourer, William 15 yrs an office boy, Phyllis 13 yrs a scholar, Lottie 10 yrs a scholar and Frank 8 yrs a scholar.
Private William Catley he was killed in action, 7th April 1917, during the attack at Le Verguier, north-west of Saint Quentin, France, he is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, Aisne, France.
Article published 21st April 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mrs Catley, 4 Mount Pleasant, Millgate, Newark. A Christ Church boy and later worked on Mr Garner’s engine. Elder brother, Pte E. Catley has had his arm badly fractured while at the front and is now in England. His sister’s husband, Drummer Clewes, had been at the front a considerable time with 1/8th Sherwood Foresters and is now in the navy on board a destroyer.
