Family History

John was born in 1875 the son of John Abraham Hurst Hirst J.P. and Julia Caroline Hirst (née Wheelwright ). He was the brother of Mary Angeline and Harold. In 1911, the family was living at Moorgate Villas, Retford. His father John living on private means. John’s effects of £2339/5/4d were left to his brother Harold and sister Mary Angeline (Probate, London 22/1/1917).

Military History

John enlisted in London he went to France in July 1916 and was serving with the 23rd battalion (1st Sportsman battalion) City of London Regiment. Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France Grave Reference: I F 26

Retfordian, 'In Memoriam': Edgar Hurst Hirst who was with us when a little boy in 1887, joined as a private in the 29th Royal Fusiliers (University and Public School battalion) in March 1916 and went to Edinburgh for his training. he left for France in July, was transferred to the 23rd Royal Fusiliers and was killed by shell near Hebuterne on September 16th, and was buried at Colinchamps.
