Retford - King Edward VI Grammar School
This memorial was originally housed in the King Edward VI Grammar School London Road Retford which closed in 2005 . A new school, Retford Oaks Academy (DN22 7NJ), took its place and the memorial was relocated to its premises. The board is headed 'Ex Pulvere Palma' (The rewards of victory arise from out of the dust) and the inscription reads 'IN MEMORY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE KING EDWARD VI GRAMMAR SCHOOL RETFORD WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR'. King Edward VI Grammar School - Shrine
In the Spring term 1917 edition of the 'Retfordian' magazine mention is made of this shrine.
It was decided to place it on the wall of the Big Schoolroom, behind the Headmasters desk , a War shrine of good, yet unpretentious design, and in this issue we present a photographic reproduction of what has been selected. It is from the design of Messers. Bodley & Hare, the well known Arhitects, and is a triptych constructed of battleship teak from H.M.S. Britanic and the cross covered with hammered copper from the same vessel.
King Edward VI Roll of Honour
This is a page from the final 1918 edition of the 'Retfordian' magazine showing the Roll of Honour for boys who had attended the school and fell during the 'Great war'
It can be seen the Roll of Honour contains 46 names, however the main wooden memorial only contains 44 names. the 2 missing names are of G Reginald Sissons and Reginald H Wood.
