Bernard Swindell was the son of George Swindell and Mary Astill who married at Nottingham in 1879. Their children included: Robert (b.1880), Sarah Elizabeth (b.1882), George (b.1886), Leonard Thomas (b.1891), Bernard (b.1893), Harold (b.1896), William Henry (b.1899) and Wilfred Astill (b.1902). The Swindell family lived at: 6 Radcliffe Terrace, Nottingham [C.1881]; 47 Citadel Street, Radford [C.1891]; 10 Beresford Street, Old Radford [C.1901 & CWGC]. George Swindell, who worked as a carter, died at Nottingham, aged 62, in 1915. His wife Mary died in the Basford registration district, aged 72, in 1930.
Bernard Swindell who enlisted in Territorial Force 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters and 71041 Sgt Bernard Swindell are the same person. In 1911 1363 Bernard Swindell aged 17 years born on 23/11/1893 enlisted in 7th TF battalion for 4 years. He was living at 10 Beresford Street Radford Nottingham. His father was George Swindell at the same address. He was embodied for service on 5/8/1914 and went to France on 28/2/1915 with 7th battalion. His termination of service was 7/5/1916 and by this time he was a sergeant. He then seems to have enlisted again with the number 71041 and went overseas sometime in 1916, joining the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. At 2 am on 27th April, 'A' company was engaged as a wiring party, working at one of the sentry posts. The enemy shelled the area bursting nine gas cylinders which lay in the in the trench, resulting in 2/Lt Harding and 30 other ranks becoming casualties. Bernard was one of fifteen men killed and they are buried side by side in Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. Grave Reference: III.D.12. John Morse
