Tom Gabbitas was born in 1898 in Newark and was the of Henry a railway platelayer and Lily Gabbitas née Shepherd of 54 Parliament Street, Newark. His father Henry was born in 1870 at Newark and his mother was born in 1872 at Retford, they were married in 1895 at Newark and they went on to have a further child, a daughter Lizzie born 1901 also in Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Barratts Yard Millgate, Newark and are shown as Henry 41 yrs a railway plate layer, he is living with his wife Lily 39 yrs and their children, Tom 13 yrs a scholar and Lizzie 10 yrs a scholar.
Private Tom Gabbitas was called up for service on 16th October 1916 at Newark, he was 19 yrs and 151 days old, his address was 4 Barratts Yard, Mill, Gate, Newark, his next of kin was his father Henry of the same address, his occupation was that of a labourer. He was posted on 19th October 1916 to the 2nd battalion Royal Scots Regiment. He landed in France on 7th October 1917 and joined his unit in the field on 14th October 1917. Whilst serving with 'B' Coy he was killed in action on 4th May 1918 and is buried at Sandpits British Cemetery, Fouquereuil, Pas de Calais, France.
Article published 22nd May 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Only son of Henry & Lily Gabbitas, 54 Parliament Street, Newark. Born in Castlegate and attended Christ Church Day School and Lombard Street Congregational Sunday School. Being later employed at Messrs. Quibell Bros. up to the time of enlisting in the Royal Scots with his pal Pte. A. Grosse (killed at nearly the same time) on Oct. 16th, 1916. Home on leave seven months ago, shortly afterwards going out to France.
