Family History

Alfred Lewis Slater was born in 1897 and was the only son of Smith a press die fitter and Annie Elizabeth Slater née Pullan of 'Everdene' Bathwood Rive Sutton in Ashfield. Smith was born in 1868 at Keighley, Annie Elizabeth Pullam was born in 1871 at Wilsden, Yorkshire, they were married on 31st May 1890 at St Marys Church, Keighley and had the one child. In 1911 the family lived on Bathwood Drive Sutton in Ashfield Smith Slater is 43 yrs and a die press fitter, he is living with his wife Annie Elizabeth 40 yrs and their son Alfred Lewis 14 yrs a drapers errand boy.

Military History

Private Alfred Slater, enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield , he initially served with the service number 40401 in the South Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, when was killed in action on 14th August 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium.
