Family History

George William Henley was the son of William Henley and Caroline Georgeiner May Dawson who married at Nottingham in 1879. Their children included: Catherine Francis Sarah (b.1880), George William (b.1881), Alfred (1883), Margaret (b.1884), John James (b.1887), William (b.1894), Caroline Hilda (b.1896), May (b.1898), Herbert (b.1899) and Clarence (b.1903). The family lived at: 4 Hartwell Terrace, St Ann’s [C.1881]; 55 Denman Street, Radford [C.1891]; 24 Raleigh Street, All Saint’s Parish, Nottingham [C.1901 & C.1911]. William Henley, who worked as a lacemaker, died at Nottingham, aged 81, in 1935. His wife predeceased him, dying at Nottingham in 1924, aged 62. In 1902 George William Henley married Harriet [Ann] Brooks at Nottingham. Their children included: Hilda May (b.1902), Millicent (b.1904), Ivy Caroline (b.1905), George Edward (b.1907), Lilian (b.1912) and John (b.1914). George William Henley’s address as given in the local newspaper after his death was announced was the same as in 1911, namely 14 Prospect Street, Radford [n.e.p.11.7.1917]. Harriett Ann Henley died at Nottingham, aged 75 in 1956.

Military History

Enlisted at Nottingham; died of his wounds; Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. War Obituary, All Saints Church News August 1917: ‘George William Henley, 14 Prospect Street, son of Mr and Mrs Henley, 14 Raleigh Street, Private Sherwood Foresters, aged 36, was in the old ‘Robin Hoods’ and sent to France early in the war, wounded in July 1916, recovered and returned to France, killed by trench mortar June 8th 1917, leaves a widow and 6 children. The second son of the family to be killed in the war.’

His brother Private John James Henley, 1st Bn. Sherwood Foresters was killed in action 22 December 1914.
