Harry was the son of William and Mary Ellen Tipping (died 1904 ) and the brother of Frederick Tipping. In 1910 they lived at 36 Sneinton Road Nottingham. He was the adopted son of Mrs Sarah McCracken, of 203 Windmill Row, Carlton Hill, Carlton. In 1911 he was living with his aunt Lily Oldershaw at 59 Loughborough Avenue Sneinton Dale Nottingham.
Private Harry Tipping enlisted at Carlton and served with the 1st battalion king's Own ( Royal Lancaster Regiment ) he was killed in action on 14th December 1916. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme
This man id'd from the Medal Roll which unusually cites the address (20 Windmill Road Carlton Hill Nottingham) of the relative claiming his medals. His brother Frederick William Tipping Served with the Tank Corps , he was killed in action at the Battle of Cambrai and is buried in Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery Grave Reference: III B 9 Death notice published 3rd January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TIPPING. – Killed in action, December 14th, 1916, Private Harry Tipping, King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, late of 56, Dale-road, Carlton Hill; 20 year Nottingham Gas Department.
