Family History

George Richard Whitworth was born on 3rd March 1897 at Radford and was the son of Richard a carriage examiner for the Midland Railway Company and Eliza Sarah Whitworth née Lake of 21 Alderney Street, Lenton. His father Richard was born in 1859 at Nottingham, his mother Eliza Sarah Lake was born in 1864 at Grimston, Norfolk, they were married on 24th December 1881 at Christ Church, Radford, they had the following children, Kate Alice b1883, Jane Gertrude b1884, Hannah b1887, Ethel b1891, George Richard b1897, Doris Florence b1908, Elsie May b1909. In the 1911 census the family lived at 21 Alderney Street, Lenton, Nottingham and were shown as Richard 52 yrs a carriage examiner for the Midland Railway company, he is living with his wife Eliza 47 yrs and their children, Hannah 23 yrs a lace winder, Ethel 20 yrs a lace worker, George Richard 14 yrs an errand boy, Doris Florence 3 yrs of age and Elsie May 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private George Whitworth, served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His death was not confirmed until 25th July 1917. He has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
