Thomas was born in 1885 in Sneinton and the son of Charles a lace maker and Martha Grice nee Crosby of 44 Lees Hill Street, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1852 in Nottingham, and his mother Martha Crosby was born in 1854 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1875 in Radford, it would appear Martha brought a child to the marriage, Alfred West Crosby born 1872 in Nottingham. Following their marriage they had the following children, Eliza b1876, Charles b1878, Maria b1882, Thomas b1885, Mary b1888 and Mark b1890 all of whom were born at Nottingham. Thomas marries his wife Ellen Swords (born 1885 Sneinton) at Nottingham in 1909. In the 1911 census Thomas is living with his new wife Ellen at 12 Selkirk Street, Carrington, Nottingham, he is 26 yrs of age and a gas labourer for the borough council, his wife Ellen also 26 yrs is a hall cleaner at the Picture Palace. His parents on the same 1911 census are living at 44 Lees Hill Street, Sneinton and are shown as Charles 60 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Martha 57 yrs , they state they have been married for 36 yrs and have had 11 children, 4 of whom had sadly died.
Private Thomas Grice, enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the service number 943 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later transferring to the 8th Battalion Tank Corps. He landed in France on 28th February 1915 and died of influenza on 6th November 1918 and is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery.
Death notice published on 14th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GRICE. – Died of influenza in France, on the 6th inst., Gnr. Thomas Grice, Tank Corps, late of the Robin Hoods, of 2 Marne-villas, Archer-street, the faithful and loving husband of Nellie Grice. A faithful husband, father kind, to us he was in heart and mind; he always tried to do his best. God grant him eternal rest.
