Family History

Richard Comery was born in 1884 at Old Basford and was the son of John a bricklayers labourer and Jane Comery née Watkinson of 37 North Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, his mother Jane Watkinson was born in 1856 at Dublin they were married on 7th July 1872 at Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Phoebe b1874, Maria b1876, Benjamin b1877, Matilda b1880, William b1882, Richard b1884, Robert Watkinson b1886, Sarah b1888, May b1890, Charles b1892 and Ivy b1898 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 37 North Street, Sneinton and are shown as John 56 yrs a bricklayers labourer, he is living with his wife Jane 55 yrs and their children, Phoebe 37 yrs a french polisher, Maria 35 yrs a net mender, Sarah 23 yrs a lace pattern girl, May 21 yrs a finisher, Charles 19 yrs a van lad and Ivy 12 yrs of age a scholar. Richard married his wife Alice Kate Taylor (born 1882) they were married on 25th August 1906 at St Michaels Church, Aldershot In 1911 they lived at 66 Whitechapel Street Old Basford Nottingham and by the time of his death were living at 2 Ward Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His widow Alice later re married to William Startin on 5th July 1916.

Military History

Rifleman Richard Comery enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2nd battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 8th March 1915 and was killed in action on 9th May 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the the Le Touret Memorial, France.

Extra Information

His brother Private William Comery was called up and served in 'B' Coy, 10th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). The regiment was involved in following up the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line and was killed in action on 17/02/1917. He was buried at Sailly Saillisel British Cemetery (grave ref Vl.D.6).
