Family History

Gordon Peniston Berridge was born in 1886 at New Whittington, Derbyshire he was the son of Kate Smith of Basford. He married Ellen Eliza Tandy on 22nd September 1915 at St Faiths Church, Wilford, Following his death his widow was not eligible for a pension as they were married following his discharge from the Army She later remarried George Ward in 1917 and lived at Birchwood Lane, Somercotes, Alfreton.

Military History

Private Gordon Peniston Berridge enlisted on 20th August 1904 at Nottingham, giving his age as 18 yrs and 2 months he was a labourer and his religion was that of a Wesleyan. He was posted to the Leicestershire Regiment and served in Madras India from 1911 until the battalion returned to England on 8th September 1914. He landed in France on 9th September 1914, he returned to England on 27th May 1915 and was admitted to hospital diagnosed with TB (tuberculosis) Recommended for a discharge as permanently unfit by Medical Board 9 June 1915 Discharged 22 July 1915. No longer physically fit for war service. Military service 10 years 338 days He died on 14th December 1915 and is buried at Radcliffe Cemetery

Extract from the minutes of Nottinghamshire County Council's Committee of Visitors of Notts County Lunatic Asylum, 26 October 1915. Item 7 War Service. 'An attendant named Gordon Berridge in the service of the Asylum at the outbreak of the War, has recently been discharged from the Army, suffering from the effects of gas poisoning.'
