Thomas was born in Redhill in 1896, the youngest son of Thomas a coal miner and Rose Alice Ellis née Hinckley of Nix Cottages, Redhill, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. His father Thomas was born in 1863 in Carlton Le Morland, Lincolnshire and his mother Rose Alice Hinkley was born in 1865 in Barmby, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1884 in Newark and went on to have 5 children, Walter Edward b1886 in Eakring, Annie b1890 Arnold, Rebecca b1891 Arnold, Rose Alice b1893 Arnold and Thomas b1896 Arnold In the 1911 Census his family are living at Nix House, Redhill, Arnold, and are shown as Thomas 48 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Rose Alice 46 yrs and their children , Annie 21 yrs a laundry maid at Daybrook , Rebecca 20 yrs a cotton winder, Rose Alice 18 yrs a laundry maid at Daybrook and Thomas 15 yrs of age, coal garner (underground).
His service record shows that he attested at Hucknall on 4th September 1914 for 'the duration of the war' gave his place of birth as Redhill, Arnold and his age as 19 years and 90 days and his occupation as that of a miner.He was posted to various camps while in England including Lincoln, Bovington, Lulworth and Brocton and eventually went with his battalion to France on 7th June 1915. On 21st November 1915 he was diagnosed with 'trench foot' and returned to England via the Australian hospital ship 'St Dennock' to recover. He eventually returned to Etaples on 8th June 1916 and on the 20th joined the 7th battalion,Lincolnshire Regiment. He went on to fight during the battle of the Somme but he was killed in action during the battle on 3rd July 1916
His name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial on the Somme. His elder brother Walter, was killed in action with The Sherwood Foresters
