Family History

Joe Booth, or as he was registered Joseph Brammer {sic} Booth, was born on 13 June 1881. Both of his parents were natives of Coddington, Notts where they married in 1864. He was, Joseph Booth, and she was Elizabeth Bramley. In 1881 they were living at Balterton Road, Coddington and Joseph senior was making his living as a labourer. They had nine children in all, John 1864 (died in infancy), Sarah 1867 (died in infancy), Fred 1869, John 1871, Sarah 1872, Isabella 1876, Joe 1881, Ann 1884 and Elizabeth 1887. All were born in Coddington and shortly after the last birth, they moved residence to Barnby in the Willows, Newark, where Joseph senior was working as a farmer. By 1911, young Joe was making his own way in life and was living as a boarder, and working as a farm labourer in Tuxford, Notts. The heads of the household were John William and his wife Lucy Winifred Schofield. Joe is later reported as enlisting from Mansfield.

Military History

Lance Cpl Joe Booth Retford Times 24 September 1915 Official information has been received that Lance Cpl Joe Booth, Tuxford, of the 2nd Royal Irish Rifles, died on June 16th as a result of wounds received in action. Mrs [sic] L Schofield, of Lincoln, brother of the deceased soldier, has received the following letter from Lieut A D La Souche ‘D’ Co. Royal Irish Rifles:- “Re you letter of the 15th August regarding your brother, No 8128 Lance Cpl J Booth, I very much regret to inform you that your brother died from the effects of a bullet wound received in the head. He was hit whilst taking part in an attack, and died shortly after. In expressing the sympathy of his comrades and myself, I am, etc.” Commemorated on the Ypres (Minin Gate) Memorial

Unverified Information - It has been reported that Joe Booth was not the brother of Lucy Winifred Schofield, but that he boarded with the Schofield family. Moderator's comment:- Joe Booth did not have a sister called Lucy Winifred as shown in the family history above. Lucy Winifred Schofield's maiden name was Gill. Research by Colin Dannatt
