Family History

Robert Caunt was born in 1883 the son of Arthur a coal miner and Ann Caunt née Hopkinson of 2 Church Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Arthur was born in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, Ann Hopkinson was born in 1859 at North Wingfield, they were married on 23rd July 1879 at North Wingfield, they had eight children of whom seven were still alive at the time of the 1911 census although only six were in the family home at 2 Church Street, Sutton in Ashfield, on the night of the census: Mary (31), Robert (27), Emma (25), William Arthur (20), Harold (18) and Alice (15). Arthur and Anne had another daughter, their eldest child, Millicent A. who in 1901 was 19 years old and still living at home. In 1891 the family was living at Goodley's Hollow, Sutton in Ashfield, but by 1901 were at 38 Club Street, Sutton in Ashfield. Robert was married to Clara Wharmby in 1911 (registration district Mansfield, Jul/Aug/Sep 1911) they lived at 64 Priestic Road, Sutton in Ashfield and had the following children, Arthur born 3rd February 1912, Annie 29th January 1914 and Harold 20th August 1916. His father died on 1 March 1924 aged 68 and his mother at the same age on 21 April 1928. Commencing 19th November 1917 his widow Clara was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week

Military History

Private Robert Caunt enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield, He died of wounds 0n 5th May 1917 at 55 Casualty Clearing Station and is buried in La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery, Peronne (grave ref. II.B.7). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Family headstone, Sutton in Ashfield cemetery, ‘In loving memory of Arthur the beloved husband of Ann Caunt who died March 1st 1924 aged 68 years. Also Ann beloved wife of the above who died April 21st 1928 aged 68 years. Make them to be numbered with my saints in glory everlasting. Also of Robert their son and beloved husband of Clara Caunt who fell in the Great War May 5th 1917 aged 33 years.’
