He was the only son of John James and Sarah Ann Carter of 356 Radford Road, Nottingham. Born Fourth Quarter 1891 Nottingham On 1901 Census he is living with his parents at 205 Mansfield Road, Nottingham. His father is listed as a publican On 1911 Census he is living with his parents at 356 Radford Road, Nottingham. His father is listed as a draper and John as a lace machinery mechanic
Enlisted May 1915 Joined 2nd/1st Nottinghamshire Battery RHA Possibly posted overseas with the Battery in June 1917, the Battery arriving at Basra on 13 August 1917 He died of wounds (gun shot wound to abdomen) and is buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged), 5 April 1918: 'Carter. Died of wounds March 27th, Driver John Carter, Royal Horse Artillery, in his 27th year. Only son of John and Sarah Ann Carter, 356 Radford Road.' In memoriam published 27th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CARTER. – In loving memory of our dear son, Driver John Carter, 1/1st Notts. R.H.A., died of wounds in Mesopotamia March 27th, 1918. Sadly missed. – Mother & dad. “CARTER. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear nephew, Driver John Carter, died of wounds March 27th, 1918.
