Family History

Herbert was born in Arnold in 1885, the son of Samuel a grocer and shop keeper and Sarah Ann Orange née Henshaw of Front Street, Arnold, Nottingham. Samuel was born in 1851 in Woodborough, Nottinghamshire and worked as a grocer, Sarah Ann Henshaw was born in 1855 in the next village of Lambley they were married in 1878 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 6 children all of whom were born in Arnold, Frank b1879, Gertrude b1881, Ethel b1884, Herbert b1885, Edith b1887 and Mabel b1896. In the 1911 Cencus the family are living at Front Street, Arnold, and are shown as Samuel Orange 60 yrs living on private means, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 56 yrs and their children Frank 32 yrs a commercial traveller, Gertrude 30 yrs an assistant school teacher, Ethel 27 yrs a costumier, Herbert is 26 yrs a clerk ( He later worked for Mr Palmer a boot and shoe repairer on High Street) Edith 24 yrs a machinist and Mabel 15 yrs a telephone operator.

Military History

He enlisted in February 1917 into the Royal Artillery at Nottingham and was posted to the 29th Siege Battery.He died in the 2/1 Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, died of dysentery on 16th September 1918. He is buried in Arnold Cemetery .

In memoriam published 17th September 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ORANGE. – Died of dysentery in hospital, September 16th, 1918, Gnr. H. S. Orange, R.G.A. The supreme sacrifice. – From sorrowing father, brother, and sisters.” In memoriam published 16th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ORANGE. – In loving memory of Gnr. H. S. Orange, R.G.A., died in military hospital, September 16th, 1918.
