Thomas Starbuck was born in 1896 at Cinderhill and was the son son of Urban Oldham Starbuck a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Starbuck née Jennings of 69 Merchant Street Bulwell Nottingham. His father Urban was born 1858 at Langley Mill and his mother Mary Ann Jennings was born in 1859 at Earl Loame, Suffolk they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Mary Ann brought a child to the marriage Florence Jennings b1881 Basford, they went on to have the following children, Urban b1883 Basford, Mary Ann b1886 Basford, Lillie b1887 Cinderhill, Nellie b1889 Cinderhill, Emma b1891 Baford, Annie b1893 Cinderhill, Thomas b1896 Cinderhill, Charles b1897 Cinderhill, Leonard b1900 Basford, William b1902 Bulwell, In the 1911 census the family are living at 69 Merchant Street, Bulwell and are shown as Urban 52 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 52 yrs and their children, Lillie 24 yrs a lace drawer, Nellie 22 yrs a lace drawer, Annie 18 yrs a hosiery machinist, Thomas 15 yrs a rope boy in a colliery, Charles 13 yrs a scholar, Leonard 11 yrs a scholar William 9 yrs a scholar.
Lance Bombardier Thomas Starbuck enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 130th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died of illness at 21st stationary hospital, Salonika and is buried at Sarigol Military Cemetery, Greece.
His younger brother Charles Starbuck also served during the 'Great War' he enlisted on 8th June 1915 at Hucknall giving his age as 19 yrs and 79 days and his address as 69 Merchant Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, his next of kin was his father Urban of the same address. He was posted to the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 6th March 1916. He died of wounds on 5th September 1916 in the 35th casualty clearing station and is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No 1
