Arthur Stokes was the son of Mary Ann Stokes. Although from 1891 onwards the censuses record her as being a married woman no husband ever appears listed alongside her. Her children included: Lucy Ann (b.1887), May (b.1890), Minnie Beatrice (b.1894), Arthur (b.1896) and Elizabeth (b.1899). The Stokes family lived at: 3 Booth’s Yard, Bloomsgrove Street, Radford [C.1891]; Devonshire Street, Newbold, Derbyshire [C.1901]; 20 Garfield Road, Radford [C,1911]. In 1901 Mary Ann Stokes was working as a charwoman but in 1911 she acting as housekeeper for Ben Girling, a widower, with whom the Stokes family were living. 20 Garfield Road, Radford was also the address given when a death notice for Private Arthur Stokes was inserted in the local newspaper [n.e.p.22.4.1918]. Mary Stokes appears to die in Nottingham, aged 60, in 1923.
He enlisted at Nottingham; died from his wounds; but the location of his place of burial was lost so his name was added to the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France
