John Edgar Stead was born in 1896 he was the son of John Robert Stead a railway shed man and Rebecca Hackney of Back Lane, Tuxford. John Robert was born in 1870 at Retford, Rebecca Hackney was born in 1871 at Saxelby, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district, they went on to have 10 children. In 1911 the family are living at Back Lane, Tuxford, John 41 yrs is a railway shed man , he is living with his wife Rebeca 40 yrs and their 8 children including John Edgar 15 yrs and a grocery errand boy.

Military History

Lance Corporal John Edgar Stead enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1912, he landed in France in July 1915 he was killed in action on 9th October 1915 having no known grave hus name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

An article in the Retford Times read;- lance Corporal John Edgar Stead Retford Times 05/11/15. East Markham hero killed in action Official intimation has been received that Lance Corporal John Edgar Stead of the Grenadier Guards was killed in action in France on Oct 9th. The deceased soldier was only 19 years of age, a native of Tuxford, but well known in the district round. He joined the Guards three years ago and only went to France in July last. Miss Stead his sister who resides at East Markham has also received the following letter from the Sergeant of the platoon to which deceased was attached:- " France Oct 9th 1915. It is with the greatest regret I have to inform you of the death of Lance Corporal Jack Stead. He was killed in action at dusk yesterday, during a severe bomb attack, he was a particular chum of mine and extremely popular in his platoon. You can be certain how we all shall miss him."
