Family History

Harry Lobley was born in 1890 at Laneham he was the son of John James a game keeper and his first wife Louisa Lobley née Barber and the brother of Percy, Winifred, Emma, Frederick, Eleanor, James, Neville Edward and Eva Lobley. John James was born in 1862 at Willingham, Jessie Emma Barber was born in 1862 at Long Stratton, Norfolk she died in 1897 she was 35 yrs of age, they had 9 children. John James remarried in 1899 at Spilsby, Lincolnshire to Louisa Marshall born 1869 at Bucknall, Lincolnshire, they had 3 further children. In 1901 the family lived on Church Lane North Wheatley Lincolnshire and in 1911 at Spitfire Cottage Bothamsall Retford Nottinghamshire. Harry married Alice Maud May Newbert (born 8th August 1893) on 25th Decmber 1913 at St Giles Church, Darlton. they lived at Ragnall and a son Charles Edward Lobley born 8th October 1914. Commencing 26th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Gunner Harry Lobley attested on 31st January 1916 at Newark, giving his age as 26 years and 37 days, he was a gardener, posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 17th July 1916 and posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery, 212th Siege Battery. Embarking from Southampton on 29th November 1916 he landed at Le Harve the same day. Admitted to field hospital on 19th May 1917 with gun shot wounds to his left leg and arm he died of his wounds on 20th May 1917 at the 1st casualty clearing station and is buried Chocques Military Cemetery (grave ref I.K.31) The obituary of Gunner Harry Lobley, Worksop Guardian 8 June 1917 Gunner Harry Lobley, Royal Garrison Artillery, son of Mr John Lobley, Elkesly, has made the great sacrifice. Previous to enlistment on July 17th 1916, he was employed by Sir Charles Ellis in the gardens at Rampton Manor and at Thorney Military Hospital. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and was in France in November, 1916. He was wounded on May 20th, and died the same day. He was 27 years of age, and leaves a widow and one son to mourn his loss. He has three other brothers’ serving.
