Joseph William Lewin was the son of Ambrose Lewin and Mary Elizabeth Regan who married at Nottingham in 1889. Their children included: Joseph William (b.1890), Florrie (b.1893), Ellen/Helen (b.1895), Harold Ambrose (b.1897), James (b.1900), Margaret (b.1902), George (b.1903), Ethel (b.1905), Winifred Maud (b.1907) and Jessie (b.1909). The Lewin family lived at: 24 Schooner Street, Radford [C.1891]; 14 Stansfield Street, Radford [C.1901]; 27 Forster Street, Radford [C.1911]. The Nottingham Evening Post reporting the death of Private J.W. Lewin gave his address as 8 Garfield Road, late of Forster Street [n.e.p.25.7.1916]. The post-war address provided by the CWGC for his parents was Mozart Street, Radford Boulevard. Ambrose Lewin, a lace maker, died at Nottingham, aged 76, in 1947. His wife, Mary Elizabeth had predeceased him, dying at Nottingham in 1942, aged 72.
Private Joseph William Lewin, enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with Yorkshire Light Infantry [Service No.17944]; subsequently moved to the 9th [Service] Bn. York and Lancaster Regiment. He died of wounds on 5th July 1916 at No. 21 Casualty Clearing Station. He had been admitted to the 26th Field Ambulance on 2nd July 1916 suffering from wounds to the head and both legs. He was buried in La Neuville British Cemetery, Corbie
Additional Information: His brother Private Harold Ambrose who served with the 12th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers died 25 September 1915.
