Family History

Joseph Taylor was born in 1888 at North Colingham and was the son of William Henry a farm labourer and Sarah Ann Taylor née Cook of Woodhill Road, North Collingham, Nottinghamshire. His father William Henry was born in 1856 and his mother Sarah Ann Cook was born in 1860 both were born in North Collingham they were married at All Saints Church North Collingham on 27th October 1879 and went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, George Henry b1880 North Collingham, Lucy Ethel b1882 North Collingham, William 1883 North Collingham, Ann b1884 North Collingham, John Henry b1886 North Collingham, Joseph b1888 North Collingham, Emily b1893 Bleasby, Walter b1897 Bleasby. and Edith b1899 Southwell. In the 1911 census the family are living at Woodhill Road, North Collingham and are shown as William Henry 54 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 51 yrs and their children George Henry 31 yrs a farm labourer, Emily 17 yrs no occupation listed, Walter 14 yrs a scholar and Edith 11 yrs of age. In the same 1911 census we find that Joseph has left the family home , having joined the army he is living at barracks at Lydd Camp, Kent he is shown as 23 yrs of age is married and is serving with the 9th Lancers. Joseph married his wife Gertrude Maud prior to the 1911 census , his pension card shows they had two children, Albert Edwin born 12th April 1912 and Frederick Ernest born 6th February 1914, it states she was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 9 pence which was to commence on 19th May 1919. His widow remarried in 1921 at Canterbury to Robert Upton and they lived at 17 Broad Street, Canterbury.

Military History

Private Joseph Taylor served with the 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers and was with the 9th Lancers on the 1911 census at barracks at Lydd Camp, Kent. He landed in France on 30th October 1914 and died of broncho pneumonia on 14th November 1918 he is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. 50.C.13
