Robert Fairchild was the son of Anderson Fairchild and Caroline hardy who married in Grantham in 1885. The couple’s six children identified were: William (b.1886), Emma (b.1889), Mary (b.1893), Robert (b.1895), Ellen (b.1899) and James Albert (b.1902). Mary was born in Gainsborough but all the other children’s birthplace was Grantham. The fairchild family homes were at: Hamlet Court, Grantham [C.1891]; 21 Inner Street, Grantham [C.1901]; 68 Independent Street, Radford [C.1911]; 5 Claypole Road, Hyson Green [n.e.p.22.2.1917]. Anderson Fairchild was variously a bricklayer’s labourer {C.1891] labourer in the iron trade [C.1901], iron dresser [C.1911]. He died at Nottingham, aged 67 in 1930. His wife, Caroline, predeceased him, dying at Nottingham, aged 54, in 1918.
Pte. Robert Fairchild, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he died of wounds 11th January 1917. He is buried in Varennes Military Cemetery. Somme, France (grave ref. I.F.41).
Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 22 February 1917: 'Private R Fairchild (South Staffordshires), 5 Claypole Road, Hyson Green, died of wounds January 11th, age 21.' In memoriam published 29th January 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “FAIRCHILD. – In ever-loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private R. Fairchild, of South Staffords, died of wounds, January 11th, late of 5, Claypole-road. A bitter blow, a shock severe, to lose the one we loved so dear. – From his sorrowing mother, father, sisters, brother, and brother Will (in France). “FAIRCHILD. – In loving memory of my dear brother, Private R. Fairchild, who died of wounds January 11th, late of 5, Claypole-road.
