Family History

Frederick was born in 1887 at Little Bytham, Lincolnshire and was the son of John a waggoner on a farm and the late Susan Lyon née Rudkin of North Collingham. His father John was born in 1861 at Castle Bytham and his mother Susan Rudkin was born in 1859 also at Castle Bytham, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Bourne Registration District, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. His mother Susan died in 1909 aged 47 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at Inglby, Saxilby, Lincolnshire and are shown as John 50 yrs a widower, waggoner on a farm, he is living with his children Fred 24 yrs a waggoner on a farm, Kate 20 yrs no occupation listed, John William 18 yrs a cowman on a farm, Evelyn Annie 12 yrs a scholar, Florence Ada 8 yrs and Mabel 6 yrs.

Military History

Private Frederick Lyon enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at North Collingham and initially served with the service number 18499 in the Lincolnshire Regiment. Later transferring to the 25th Company Machine Gun Corps he was killed in action on 31st July 1917 and is buried at Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery and Extension, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. grave reference I.K.6
