Walter Hill was born in 1885 at Linton, Cambridgeshire and was the son of Josiah a farm labourer and Abigail Kate Hill née Smith of Waddingham village, Lincolnshire. His father Josiah was born in 1855 at Linton and his mother Abigail Kate Smith was born in 1863 in Norfolk, they were married in 1885 at Linton and went on to have 10 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Walter b1885 Linton, Alfred b1887 Linton, Josiah Benjamin b1888 Linton, Rowena b1894 Linton, Florence b1898 Woodstone, Northamptonshire, Enoch b1900 Norfolk, Mabel b1904 Lincolnshire and Harold b1908 Blakeney. Walter Hill married his wife Mabel Squires (born 5th March 1888 Navenby) in 1910 their marriage was record in the Lincoln registration district , Mabel brought a daughter Mabel Squires born 8th April 1909 Sleaford to the marriage, they went on to have two further sons Walter born 2nd July 1910 and Henry 3rd January 1912. In the 1911 census his parents and sibling are living at Waddingham village and are shown as Josiah 51 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Abigail 48 yrs and their children, Rowena 18 yrs no occupation, Florence 13 yrs a scholar, Enoch 11 yrs a scholar, Mabel 7 yrs and Harold 3 yrs. In the 1911 census Walter is living at North Collingham and he is shown as being 26 yrs a farm labourer and is living with his wife Mabel 23 yrs and children, Walter 9 months of age and Mabel Squires 2 yrs of age.
Walter Hill enlisted at Newark, he served with 'B' battery, 110th brigade Royal Field Artillery, landing in France on 26th September 1915 he was killed in action on 11th August 1917 and is buried at Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. 1.J.10
