Family History

John William Harker was born in 1893 at Harby and was the son of Joseph Harker a farm labourer and Mary Ann Harker née Leeman of High Street North Collingham Lane Newark. His father Joseph was born in 1853 at Waddington and his mother Mary Ann Leeman was born in 1855 at Horncastle, they were married in 1877 at Newark, they went on to have 13 children, sadly however 7 were to died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Kate b1890 Broadholme, John b1893 Harby, Fred b1895 Harby and Joseph b1899 Harby. In the 1911 census his parents are living at Besthorpe and are shown as Joseph 63 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 62 yrs and their son Joseph 12 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census we find that John Harker has left the home address and is a boarder living at Thorpe on the Hill, he is shown as being 17 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with Robert Dove 37 yrs a farm foreman and his wife and family.

Military History

Lance Corporal John Harker enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Collingham. He served with the 2/5th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. He landed in France on 6th July 1915 and killed in action on 15th April 1918, having no known gave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
