Family History

Tom Dakin East was born in 1886 at South Scarle and was the son of William a builder and Elizabeth East née Sharpe of North Collingham. His father William was born in 1853 at Asterby, Lincolnshire, his mother Elizabeth Sharpe was born in 1855 at South Scarle, they were married in 1881 at South Scarle and went on to have 8 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, there children were Emmie b1882, John William b1883, George b1884, Tom Dakin b1886, Fred b1887, Eliza Mary b1892 and Herbert b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Collingham village and are shown as William 58 yrs a builder, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 56 yrs and their children, Tom Dakin 24 yrs a plumber and Fred 23 yrs a butcher. Tom Dakin married Laura Louise Wells in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district, they lived at South Collingham and went on to have two children, Horace William born 27th July 1913 and Elizabeth born 1st November 1915. His widow Laura was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence commencing 15th April 1918

Military History

Private Tom Dakin East enlisted at Newark whilst residing at South Collingham he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st September 1917 and is buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, Roeux, Pas de Calais, France. grave reference IV.B.55

Article published 10th October 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Resided with wife, Laura L. East & two children in North Collingham. Killed on the 21st September, about midnight by the explosion of a trench mortar. Apprenticed as a plumber with Mr Bingham, formerly of Collingham. At the time of his enlistment was employed by Mr S. Moss. As a boy he was a member of North Collingham church choir and later an enthusiastic bell ringer. Brother: Pte. Fred East was reported missing on August 8th, 1916 and has now been presumed killed. His brother Corporal Fred East enlisted on 4th January 1916 at Brandon, Manitoba, he gave his date of birth as 3rd September 1886 and that he was a butcher, he gave his address as care of King Edward Hotel, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. His next of kin was his wife Marion of the same address. He served with the 4th battalion Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment) He was killed in action on 8th October 1916 and is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery Grandecourt Somme France. grave reference. 3.A.8
