Family History

Arthur Brompton was born in 1872 at North Collingham and was the son of William a miller and baker and Harriett Brompton, née Marshall of High Street, North Collingham. His father William was born in 1844 at Besthorpe and his mother Harriett Marshall was born in 1840 at Beckingham, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1868 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration District, they went on to have 8 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children all born in North Colingham were, Georg Henry b1870, Arthur b1872, Walter b1873, Emma b1875, Herbert b1877, John b1880 and Frank b1881. In the 1911 census his parents are living at High Street, North Collingham, they are shown as William Brompton 67 yrs a jobbing gardener, he is living with his wife Harriett 73 yrs and their granddaughter Olive 12 yrs of age. His father William died in 1915, he was 72 yrs of age.

Military History

Driver Arthur Brompton enlisted on 21st November 1890, he enlisted to serve for 7yrs with the colours and 4 yrs in the reserves. and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery. By the 29th November 1890 he had deserted from the Army but rejoined the Army on 12th February 1891 and was arrested and sent for trial. On 24th March 1891 he was convicted and sent to prison for 14 days. He returned to duty on 10th March 1891. He then served until the outbreak of the war and landed in France on 18th August 1914 where he served with the 119th battery, Royal Field Artillery .On the 26th November 1917 he was transferred to Italy where he served until 29th March 1918 . He was once again returned to France where he served until 29th April 1919 and was returned to England for demobilisation, he was demobbed on 28th May 1919. He died on 6th June 1919 at the Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham war hospital and was buried on 9th June 1919 at North Collingham, (All Saints) Churchyard, Nottinghamshire he had served for 29 yrs
