Fred Bradbury and Catherine Matilda Daykin married in Nottingham in 1891. They lived as boarders at 28 Mill House, Kirkby in Ashfield, where Fred worked as a coal miner. Fred soon obtained a secure job in the Police force. Fred’s job entailed moving to various places as shown by the birth locations of his three children, Sam was born at Annesley in 1882, Ronald born Kirkby in Ashfield 1893 and Annie born Carlton, Notts, in 1896. It is also known that Fred was a Police Sergeant at Tuxford where his son, Ronald worked as a joiner prior to his joining the Army when war was declared.
Retford Times 21/7/1916 'Private P (Sic) Bradbury Sherwood Foresters, who as recorded in our last issue, was killed in action on 28 June. The brave lad, who was the son of Police Sergeant Bradbury of Tuxford, was 23 years of age and answered the call in November 1914. He was a joiner and carpenter, and at one time worked in Tuxford. Sergt Bradbury who has earned the well merited esteem of the parish since his appointment, has been the recipient of numerous letters of condolence in his sad bereavement.' He enlisted at Worksop, was killed in action and buried Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, France
