Samuel was the son of Samuel and Harriet Denby (née Payton). His father Samuel was born in Sutton in Ashfield on 28 December 1870 (1871 J/F/M Mansfield) and was one of at least eight children of Benjamin Denby and his wife Anne (née Turner). Benjamin Denby (b. 1847) was the son of Samuel Denby and his first wife Elizabeth (née Stringfellow); Benjamin's father had five children by his first wife and six by his second, Mary Ann (née Hudson). His mother Harriet Peyton was born in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, in about 1870. Samuel and Harriet were married at Mansfield register office in 1890 (A/M/J Mansfield). According to the 1911 Census, which was completed by Samuel as head of household, they had had nine children of whom only five were still living in 1911. Six children have been traced, but of these two had died in infancy before 1911: Enoch b. 15 November 1891 (O/N/D Mansfield) bap. 10 March 1892 St Mary Magdeline Sutton in Ashfield d. 1892 (O/N/D Basford), Samuel birth registered 1893 (J/F/M Mansfield), Edward b. 1895 (O/N/D Mansfield) d. 1895 (O/N/D Mansfield), Nellie birth registered 1899 (J/F/M Mansfield), Lily b. 1902 (A/M/J Mansfield) and Wilfred b. 22 March 1907 A/M/J Mansfield. The newly married Samuel and Harriet were living at Pinglefields, Sutton in Ashfield, in 1891 with her mother, Harriet Thorpe, a washerwoman, who was married but head of household, and her three children (Thorpe). When their son Enoch was baptised in 1892 Samuel and Harriet where living at Sherwood Cottages, Sutton in Ashfield, By 1901 Samuel (31) a framework knitter, and Harriet (31) were living at 21 Forest Street with their two surviving children, Samuel (8) and Nellie (2). Lily was born the following year and Wilfred in 1907. Harriet died aged 38 in 1908 (J/A/S Mansfield) and in 1911 the widowed Samuel was living on Reform Street with his children Samuel (18). Nellie (12), Lily (8) and Wlifred (4). Samuel married secondly Emilie Hind in 1913 (A/M/J Mansfield). Samuel was awarded probate of his son's estate in 1918, Samuel jnr's address at the time of his death was Lucknow Drive, Sutton in Ashfield. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled, Samuel, described as 'incapacitated', his wife Emilie (b. 10 September 1879) and their son Wilfred, a miner hewer, were living at Leahurst, Alfreton Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Also in the household were three bank clerks, presumably boarders or lodgers. Samuel died in 1946 (J/F/M Mansfield).
Samuel served in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He died of wounds on 27 April 1917 and was buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen (grave ref. P.I.C.9A). He qualfied for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

A close relative of Samuel's, Arthur Denby (b. 1898), served in the RNVR (Leading Seaman) and was killed on 17 May 1918 while serving in SS Mavisbrook which was sunk by a German submarine. Arthur's father, William Denby (b. 1849), was Benjamin Denby's brother. (See record on this Roll of Honour.) Oswald Denby, the son of Benjamin and William's half-brother John (b. 1865), is commemorated on the Skegby St Andrew's war memorial. However, Oswald died in 1920 and no military record has yet been traced. (See record on this ROH.)
