He was the son of John and Mary A. Hencher who in 1891 were living on Golden Lane, Underwood with their three children Sarah (11), Ernest (8) and Rebecca (6). By 1901 they had moved to Bancroft Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, and there two youngest children were at home on the night of the census. Ernest married Ellen Major in 1902 (registered Oct/Nov/Dec) and in 1911 were living at 43 Bannerman Road, Bulwell, with their daughter, Doris (10, b. 1901); they also had a boarder, Elizabeth Genet (36). Their second daughter, Barbara M., was born in 1914 (registered Jul/Aug/Sep). At the time of Ernest's death the family was living at 15 Percival Road, Sherwood, Nottingham.
He served in the Royal Army Service Corps. He died of pneumonia while serving in India and was buried in Deolali Government Cemetery (grave ref. Plot CE. Row L. Grave 40). 'Deolali (also known as Devlali) is a Cantonment in the Nashik District of Maharashtra State. It is about 175 kilometres north-east of Mumbai.' Ernest qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 26 May 1919: 'Hencher. Sergeant E Hencher, 15 Percival Road, Sherwood, died May 19th 1919 in India of pneumonia. Wife and daughters Doris and Babs.' The medal roll gives his rank as 'corporal' Research Rachel Farrand
