Arthur was born in 1895 the son of Major Harold Henry and Emma Jane Enderby née Cole. He had 6 siblings. In 1911, they lived at the Liverpool Arms Hotel, Beaumaris, North Wales where his father was the hotel keeper. Arthur’s effects of £108/16s/3d were left to his father, Harold Henry Enderby Major in H.M. Army (Probate, Nottingham 22/1/1918).
On the outbreak of war he enlisted into the 4th Battalion Bedforshire Regiment and was recommended for a commission on November 26th. He was Gazetted second lieutenant and posted to the 2nd Royal Fusiliers Sportsman battalion. After a short period of training he proceeded to the Western Front, where he saw considerable service in the trenches: "Over the top at 1.46pm , Captain Cuthbert killed also Withal, Waghorn, Marsland , Revron ! Wonder, Marsden and myself came through untouched, relieved about 11.30pm " His commanding officer wrote to his parents: "Allow me to express the deep sympathy of all ranks of the Royal Fusiliers at the loss of you gallant son. He had made himself very popular with both officers and men. I found him an excellent officer, absolutely reliable, who knew his work and did it well. At the time he was wounded he was in command of an isolated post, a nasty job calling for pluck, self-reliance and initiative, all of which he showed in a marked manner. Officers like your son cannot be spared."His father Major H. H. Enderby of 83, Hagley Road Edgbaston applied for any medals his son was entitled to on 28/12/1919.Arthur is buried in the Grevillers British Cemetery Grave Reference: VI C 16
